snowflakes

Hi, Princess!

My darling granddaughter, I love you more than life itself. There’s been a lot of hateful talk in the world lately, and I just wanted to share a bit of what I tried to teach your mommy.

We should all celebrate our differences, and we should embrace all that makes us the same.

There has never been, and there will never be, another you. By gender, heritage, experiences, and any one of a hundred different things, everybody is different from everybody else, if you combine everything that makes a person a person. At the same time, we are all human. We are all people. We have a million more things that make us the same, than things that make us different.

No two snowflakes are identical, but they are all snowflakes!

Anyway, I’m not trying to tell you what to believe, that’s not my job. All I can do is tell you what I believe.

And always remember, I love you very very very very very much!

Love,

Hi, Princess!

Okay, so a lot is going on in the world right now, especially with our new president. I’m sorry I haven’t written to you about all this stuff, but I didn’t know how to talk about it.

I guess that it’s easy to answer the questions that start Who, What, Where, When. The answers to those kinds of questions can be found in libraries, dictionaries, encyclopedias and even online.

I think the more important questions start with Why or How. Because you can’t just memorize facts, you have to think, and figure things out for yourself. I hope that makes sense.

Love you sooooooooooooooooooo much!

Farewell, Mr. President

Hi, Princess!

Barack Obama just gave his Presidential Farewell Adress. It made me cry. He talked about how we all need to respect each other, even if we don’t agree with each other. And he talked about it being our responsibility to make the world a better place.

I don’t know if you’re going to grow up to be a democrat, republican, independent, or whatever. But I hope some day you’ll watch it. It made me cry.

Acceptance

Hi, my darling granddaughter.

It was eight years ago when I called your mommy and asked her to let you stay up late and watch Barack Obama give his acceptance speech. A lot has happened in eight years.

Well, tonight I watched Hillary Clinton give her acceptance speech. I couldn’t help but think about your mommy. I couldn’t help but think of you.

I miss your mommy every single day. I miss you every single day.

All my love,

Eight years later

Hi, Princess!

Well, it’s hard to believe eight years have gone so fast. Way, way back in 2008, when you were really, really little, Barack Obama won the election to become the 44th President of the United States. When he made his speech, I got your mom to let you watch it even though you were too little and probably wouldn’t remember it, and even though it came on past the time you would have been asleep.

Eight years later, Barack Obama gave his last State of the Union Address to Congress.

Most people think he was a terrible president, but I thought he did a pretty good job.

Anyway, that’s all I’ve got for now. Love you bunches and bunches!

Love,
